I was thinking about all those musical, artistic and literary efforts for Sarajevo during its siege, 20 years ago… Wonderful, U2 & Pavarotti singing together “Miss Sarajevo”, I love that one; Max Richter’s “Sarajevo”; Spain’s writer Juan Goytisolo’s “Cuadernos de Sarajevo”, and many more… they raised money for the Sarajevo children, musicians and actors looked good showing up in public events and even taking the dangerous trip there, They got involved millions of people, who otherwise would simply had stayed there watching TV, and created awareness, that was great!
But now… who cares for our days’ Sarajevo, Aleppo? Four days ago, a bomb killed 15 people, nine of them children. They die everyday by snipers’ shots, exploding shells, disease. How many of the 70 thousand dead in two years have been children? Hundreds of thousands live in refugee camps, exposed to sexual violence and without water. Many more have lost their parents, can’t go to school, have forgotten what a playground is. For them, there is no music, only the noises of war. Everyday. Where are the world’s celebrities rushing to help them? Who’s talking about it? Who’s been there?
Aleppo seems not to be sexy enough.
I wonder why is that. Most of Sarajevo’s inhabitants were Muslim, and the attackers, Christian, so at that moment religion didn’t seem to be stopping the Christian famous ones who wanted to help.
Maybe it’s because Aleppo is far, too far… yeah, about an hour flight from Athens. Is it because Aleppo is not Europe, and while being in Europe, Sarajevo reminded Westerners that war was not as far away as 1945. Today, on the other hand, they don’t feel directly concerned and can just let Aleppo and its children sink in another Middle East’s mayhem?

Estaba pensando en todos esos esfuerzos musicales, artísticos y literarios para Sarajevo durante el sitio que sufrió, hace dos décadas… maravilloso, U2 y Pavarotti cantando juntos “Miss Sarajevo”; y “Sarajevo”, de Max Richter; el libro “Cuadernos de Sarajevo”, del escritor español Juan Goytisolo, y muchos más… recaudaron dinero para los niños de Sarajevo, músicos y actores aparecieron en eventos públicos e incluso algunos hicieron el peligroso viaje hacia allá. Involucraron a millones de personas que de otra forma se hubieran quedado viendo la tele, y crearon conciencia, ¡estuvo genial!
Pero ahora… ¿a quién le importa el Sarajevo de nuestros días, Alepo? Hace cuatro días, una bomba mató a 15 personas, de las que nueve eran niños. Todos los días mueren por disparos de francotiradores, por explosiones de mortero, por enfermedades. ¿Cuántos de los 70 mil muertos en dos años son niños? Cientos de miles viven en campos de refugiados, expuestos a violencia sexual y sin agua. Muchos más han perdido a sus padres, no pueden ir a la escuela, han olvidado lo que es un lugar de juegos. Para ellos no hay música, sólo los sonidos de una guerra brutal. Todos los días. ¿Dónde están las celebridades del mundo apresurándose a ayudarlos? ¿Quién está hablando de esto? ¿Quién ha ido allí?
Parece que, simplemente, Alepo no es suficientemente sexy.
Me pregunto a qué se debe. La mayoría de los habitantes de Sarajevo eran musulmanes, y sus atacantes, cristianos, así que en aquel momento la religión no detuvo a los cristianos famosos que querían ayudar.
Tal vez sea porque Alepo está lejos, demasiado lejos… como a una hora de vuelo desde Atenas. ¿Será por que no es Europa, y Sarajevo les recordaba a los occidentales que la guerra no estaba tan lejos como 1945, en tanto que hoy les resulta fácil dejar que Alepo y sus niños se hundan en otro caos de Medio Oriente?
