My friend Eddy Mbuyi and me went up to Bukima, in Virunga National Park, to research a story. We could see five volcanoes from there, and enjoyed a wonderful sunset. But we didn’t know that Mount Nyamulagira’s eruption, which has been going on for 18 days already, was visible from there. What’s that?, we said when we first discovered the huge lava explosions. We used a telescope, then, and were astonished. The volcano is 30 kms away from Bukima, but the lava seemed to go up in the air many hundreds of metres. Later in the night, the wind formed a kind of huge sombrero with the smoke, which then reflected the red glow of the lava. I felt like in another world.
