Famagusta


I went to Famagusta and strolled by the same walls where a fair lady disguised as a Venetian warrior led the hopeless defense of the city against the Ottomans, in Emilio Salgari’s wonderful novel “Il capitàn Tempestà”. The attackers took the place in real life, in 1571. And young Turks where entering the old city today by where their ancestors first breached the thick walls.
