Sunset in Palmyra

I climbed up the mountain. Behind the hilltop castle, I found a flat rock to sit down and let the darkness surround me. On the plain, lay Palmyra, a 2200 years old city deep in the Syrian desert, whose queen challenged and defeated the Roman emperor. The lamps lighted on the palaces and colonnades. Past sunset, from the minarets all over the valley, rose the voices of the muezzins calling for prayer.
